Online Learning

Here’s the thing—we know professional development takes a lot of coordination, time and funding. We like easing those burdens by using engaging online learning strategies. Here are some examples of what we’ve done and can do for your team, too.

Afterschool Coaching for Reflective Educators in STEM (ACRES)

an exemplar in virtual professional development

Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) launched ACRES, a hands-on STEM professional development series as a blended experience—part in-person, part online—that was piloted in Maine. We worked with them to move it to a fully online PD for afterschool practitioners across the country. Then, we helped MMSA develop a structure for training and supporting the ACRES Coaches virtually.

The result: MMSA is now able to train and support ACRES Coaches all across the country using online courses and a facilitated virtual learning community.

Virtual Statewide Training

supporting program leaders without the need for travel expenses

To provide training to all their 21st CCLC grantees, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) typically hosts about 150 program directors for a couple days of in-person meetings. The 21st CCLC Coordinator was interested in finding a training solution that would not require programs to close their sites and travel up to 5 hours away from home. We offered a series of real time virtual trainings on family engagement and STEM that program directors could participate in from their sites—no travel needed!

The result: There were skeptics in the group, but we were able to host all 150 directors in engaging online trainings that included facilitated small group breakout discussions. No boring webinars here! A quote from one participant:

“I have no idea of the cost associated with web trainings, but if they are all done in the way these were, I'd advise moving to more web based trainings to conserve funds for programming.”
