Integrating Creative Activities Into Every Aspect of Your Program
Learn some simple low-budget ways of integrating art into your afterschool environment, enriching every aspect of your program from literacy to science to club activities. Participants will learn practical strategies for making art in their afterschool program, explore the importance of arts in learning and create their own pieces of art. This workshops is for everyone, and is designed especially for staff who have little or no experience in the arts. This workshop is led by a professional artist.
Everyone Can Draw
Children are eager to learn how to draw people and things to make them look real. Drawing is a learnable and practicable skill. Using Betty Edwards’ method of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, we will learn to draw “what we see, not what we know.”
Everyone Can Paint
We will explore different painting techniques using water-based paint, and a variety of unconventional, easy-to-find surfaces and brushes.
Everyone Can Sculpt
In this three-session series, we will learn how to make three-dimensional paper portraits, use found objects to create sculpture, make a “cardboard circus,” and make our own self-drying modeling clay.
Exploring Pattern Through Printmaking
We will use different materials (vegetables and found objects) to create our own stamps and stencils ideal for printing on paper and fabric.
Making Journals By Hand
Creative Projects for Keeping Your Thoughts
We will use cardboard and various scrap paper to bind and decorate simple journals and scrapbooks.
Art From Paper
In this three-session series, we will learn paper folding and how to use waste paper and printed materials to create stuffed shapes, collages, jewelry, jewelry boxes, shopping bags and papier-mache.
The World In a Jar
We will explore traditional Japanese rock gardens, creating our own small, natural worlds.
Let’s Make Rhythm
We will use a variety of recycled and found materials to make rainmakers, rattles, and drums.
Murals, Murals, Murals
We will explore all aspects of how to make a mural with kids, from concept to finished product.
Making Masks and Disguises
We will use simple materials to make colorful masks and outfits, for fun and for theatre.
Crafty Containers from Recycled Materials
We will learn to use basic weaving/plaiting techniques to make a variety of objects from such recyclable materials as milk cartons and plastic bags.
