Direct Service for Youth

Creative Arts: Art Without Limits

DIRECT SERVICE INITIATIVES FOR ELEMENTARY,
MIDDLE
AND HIGH SCHOOL AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
These initiatives give young people who are interested in the arts the skills, knowledge and experiences that grant them access to the world of art, both creatively and practically speaking.

What it is: A Life in Art

Helping Young People Consider Their Options for Arts Education and a Career in the Arts
Many creative young people, do not consider “being an artist” as a career. However there are a number of options for visual artists to make a living with their talents and do what they love. This initiative is aimed at young people who want to learn more about the world of art and are considering applying to an art or design high school or college. Participants will learn about visual arts career and education options, internships and training and develop portfolios of work appropriate to applications.

Art Walks, Art Talks

Exploring the Cultural Resources of New York City
In this initiative, we take students to a diverse array of cultural institutions in New York City, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Opera, working artist studios, private galleries and more. Rather than simply enjoying these excursions as field trips, students will go behind the scenes and learn how an artist’s life really works. We will alternate between experiential workshops on-site to help participants build an art vocabulary, and excursions to help participants become active creators and appreciators of art.

How it works:

These direct-service initiatives will be led by a professional teaching artist who will come to your afterschool program site to work with your young people. There will be a minimum of six sessions per initiative, and the scheduling of the sessions as well as the focus of content will be adapted to the needs of your program. The two initiatives may be combined into one package.
