All Over the World

Center for Summer Learning, Johns Hopkins University Development Without Limits was engaged by the Center for Summer Learning to develop and write a summer and afterschool curriculum aimed at upper elementary and middle-school aged students, to help them to broaden their perspective, and gain an understanding of what life is like for their peers around the world.

Published: 2008
Development Without Limits was engaged by NYSAN to develop, write and design this guide, to assist afterschool practitioners in using the Program Quality Self-Assessment Tool, which has been adopted by programs and regulatory agencies across the state of New York.


Expanding HorizonsExpanding Horizons Toolkit (pdf)

Development Without Limits was engaged by The Asia Society to create a set of resources that help staff integrate global learning into before-school, afterschool, and summer programs. It is meant to provide hands-on materials that supplement and extend the Expanding Horizons: Building Global Literacy in Afterschool Programs guidebook and video (published by Asia Society in 2009 and available here). DWL is working with Asia Society to conduct professional development for afterschool networks across the country funded by the Mott Foundation.


Real Stories, Real MenReal Stories, Real Men

Youth Communication
Development Without Limits was engaged by Youth Communication to create a curriculum for schools and out-of-school settings based on the Real Stories model, aimed specifically at young men of color. This curriculum will provide engaging activities centered around true stories written by teens for their peers that will help young to explore issues and develop values.

Development Without Limits was engaged by Youthline America to develop, write, design and pilot-test this curriculum, aimed at afterschool programs and adventurous classroom teachers. The curriculum will be a key tool in Youthline America’s plan to map America, a nationwide project to engage one million youth in collecting youth related information in their communities.

Summer Youth Employee Journal and Guidebook
Development Without Limits
Published: 2006
Development Without Limits developed, wrote and designed the Summer Youth Employee Journal and Guidebook as a resource for participants in summer jobs programs nationwide. The sections of the book, which are aligned with New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program educational component, include tips and strategies to help young people be successful in their summer job and beyond. The book is highly interactive, with prompts for young people to explore their experience and practice reading and writing over the summer. DWL also produced a detailed training manual for staff to accompany the handbook.

Connecting Youth to Work Handbook
New Haven Free Public Library, Published: 2007
Development Without Limits was engaged by the New Haven Free Public Library to develop, write and design the Connecting Youth to Work handbook as part of a larger contract including training and technical assistance to provide library staff with the resources needed to run a comprehensive, community-based job readiness program. DWL also produced a detailed training manual to accompany the handbook.

New Haven Free Public Library Published: 2006
Development Without Limits was engaged by the New Haven Free Public Library to develop, write and design this guidebook for the staff of libraries and community-based organizations who work with young people afterschool, to help them to design engaging, creative ways to get young people thinking, talking and writing about qualities and people they admire.


YouthConnect: A Guide to Youth-Led Community Service

Development Without Limits was engaged by the Partnership for After School Education to research and write a guide for organizations to help them create community service programs that are led by youth.


Solving Problems Together, A Practical Training Manual for Building Neighborhood Unity

Citizen’s Committee for New York City 2002
Development Without Limits was engaged by Citizen’s Committee for New York City to write this guide for agencies to help them implement programs to bring people together to improve cooperation and tackle community problems. DWL also designed and facilitated a training of trainers for participating agencies.

Current Projects:

The National Urban League has engaged Development Without Limits to develop a staff guide focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for out-of-school time. The guide will help staff prepare older youth to graduate from high school with sufficient STEM experience, and pursue STEM-focused higher education and careers. This youth development resource will be used by National Urban League affiliates nationwide.

Go Girl Go!
DWL is currently engaged by the Women's Sports Foundation, a national organization founded by Billie Jean King, to revise and expand their Go Girl Go! afterschool curriculum, which uses sport and physical activity as an educational intervention that supports girls' health and wellness in childhood and early adulthood.

Good Game Initiative
DWL is currently engaged by Athletes for Hope, a national organization founded by Muhammad Ali, Andre Agassi, Lance Armstrong and others to empower the sports community to make a difference, to develop the Good Game Initiative , a curriculum that helps volunteer sports coaches from community organizations integrate community service into their playing season.

Connecting for Success, A Guide for Building Healthy Afterschool Communities."
LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program, which operates in 180 public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, engaged DWL to develop Connecting for Success, a staff guidebook and curricular resource that helps program staff to learn how to emotionally connect with at-risk youth, reduce their tolerance for violence and expand learning about local and global issues. DWL also created a series of professional development workshops to accompany the materials, and led LA’s BEST staff through an initial pilot phase of implementation. DWL is currently working on expanding and revising the materials.
